05/20/23 DeFord Bailey Avenue Dedication & FREE Concert

Horton Avenue in Edgehill is being renamed to DeFord Bailey Avenue! Come and celebrate this dedication and honor for the “Harmonica Wizard” DeFord Bailey. From 1926 to 1941, Bailey was one of the original stars of the Grand Ole Opry radio show, and the first Black performer. Bailey lived most of his life in the Edgehill neighborhood.

The unveiling and dedication ceremony will feature several VIPs including Deputy Mayor Brenda Haywood, at-large Council Member Sharon Hurt, DeFord Bailey’s daughters and grandchildren, and representatives of the National Museum of African American Music, Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and more.

Bailey’s two grandsons are musicians in their own right. Carlos DeFord Bailey has performed on the Opry, and Herchel Bailey fronts a popular blues and R&B band. Both will perform at the free concert, with special guest Smokin’ Otis.

The event is taking place at the William Edmondson Homesite Park in Edgehill, under the picnic pavilion close to Horton Avenue. The Youth Changes food truck will be on-site.
