N.Y. Gov. Cuomo’s aide shot in head

29670285_sfCarey Gabay, a Harvard-educated lawyer in New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration, was shot in the head during a pre-dawn party for the annual West Indian Day parade Monday in Brooklyn. The 43-year-old is listed in critical condition.

A first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corp., Gabay was apparently struck in the crossfire of two gangs at 3:40 a.m.

Gabay joined Gov. Cuomo’s administration in 2011. “I was just with the family and the tears and the frustration and I’m governor of the State of New York and there’s nothing I can say and there’s nothing I can do,” Gov. Cuomo explains in a statement. “And sometimes it just hurts.”

According to Patrick Conry, chief of Brooklyn detectives, “We have recovered a firearm. Based on ballistics evidence recovered, it appears there were two groups of people shooting back and forth at each other.” An estimated 16 shots were fired in total.

“Gabay was hit in the head by a stray bullet as he dove between parked cars for safety,” CBS New York reports.

No arrests have been made as of yet.
